Known to many people as "Mr. Nap", Cross was the head coach at Chillicothe High School between 1987-90. He also coached the CHS girls basketball team for a few years, and was part of the 2008 boys coaching, which led the Cavs to a state title that season.

He played college basketball at Arkansas-Pine Bluff and later coached Carver High School to a state championship. He also coached at Arkansas State University-Beebe for 13 seasons.
