Bubba Wallace Responds To FBI Findings: Tied Rope Was Still A "Noose"

While NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace said he was "relieved" that the FBI determined no hate crime was committed in the hanging of a noose in his garage stall at Talladega, he is frustrated that some people are claiming the whole thing was a hoax.

"I was relieved just like many others to know that it wasn't targeted towards me," Wallace said on TODAY. "But it's still frustrating to know that people are always going to test you and always just going to try and debunk you, and that's what I'm trying to wrap my head around now."

The FBI's investigation revealed that the rope was a "garage door pull rope fashioned like a noose" and had been hanging in the garage since October 2019. The agency determined that no hate crime was committed and that Wallace, who is the only black driver in the NASCAR Cup Series, was not targeted.

"Although the noose is now known to have been in garage number 4 in 2019, nobody could have known Mr. Wallace would be assigned to garage number 4 last week," the FBI said.

Wallace told CNN's Don Lemon, "what was hanging in my garage is not a garage pull."

"It was a noose," Wallace said. "Whether tied in 2019 or whatever, it was a noose. So, it wasn't directed at me, but somebody tied a noose. That's what I'm saying."

NASCAR said they are conducting an internal investigation to determine who was responsible for fashioning the rope to look like a noose.
