Decorated WWII Army Veteran from Ross County Passes Away at 97

As Veteran's Day approaches, the Ross County community is saying a sad farewell to a local veteran who showed an unwavering display of courage in his defense of our country.

James Robert “Bob” Derexson, of Yellowbud, passed away on Monday, November 4th at the age of 97.

.

Mr. Derexson was one of more than 150-thousand allied troops to storm the beach at Normandy during World War II. He served in the U.S. Army for more than 23 years, before retiring in 1966.

.

During is military service, Mr. Derexson received 14 decorations and awards. In addition to the operation in Normandy, Mr. Derexson was also present during the Battle of the Bulge where he earned four Bronze Stars.

.

Following the conclusion of his Army service, Mr. Derexson then competed flight training in 1948, and became a U.S. Air Force Pilot, serving until 1966.

In addition to his military career, Mr. Derexson also spent time on the Board of Directors for the Chillicothe-Ross Chamber of Commerce, and was a past-President of the Noon Lions Club. He was also a member and past Master of Scioto Lodge No. 6, and a former District Deputy Grand Mastor with the 7th District for the Grand Lodge of Ohio Masons.

A Military Graveside Service for James Robert “Bob” Derexson will take place this Friday, November 8th at Springbank Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, November 7th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Haller Funeral Home, where a Masonic Funeral will be conducted starting at 7:00 p.m.
