Zahn's Corner Middle School Closed After Enriched Uranium Detected

-

A middle school in Pike County is now closed following the detection of enriched uranium inside the facility.

-

Zahn's Corner Middle School on Schuster Road in Piketon has been closed until the source and the extent of the contamination can be determined.

-

In a letter from the district to parents on Monday District Board President, Brandon Wooldridge stated "It is the position of the Board that any level of contamination on or near our school is unacceptable."

-

Wooldridge also noted in the letter an additional detection, by a US Department of Energy air monitor adjacent to the school, of Neptunium 237, a by-product of nuclear reactors and plutonium production.

-

The board writes "We agree with the Pike County Health Department that the U.S. Department of Energy must take appropriate actions to ensure radiological contaminants are not being released from the site."
