The discussion about the proposed disposal site for hazardous building materials at the Piketon Atomic Plant, brings to mind other less controversial landfill sites in our area.
Chillicothe Mayor Luke Feeney says the city still monitors the Seney Road landfill, which was closed many years ago.
The mayor says that monitoring is "a big and expensive job for the city", including mowing grass and making sure there is no physical deterioration to the landfill, where waste could become exposed.
Feeney says the city spends between $30,000 to $50,000 each year to monitor the old landfill site.
Chillicothe now sends their garbage to a transfer station, which in turn goes on to a permanent landfill site in Pike County.
