Bishop Flaget Opens Student Run Credit Union

Bishop Flaget recently opened its student-run credit union, in conjunction with Atomic Credit Union, for its first round of deposits.

Students in grades 7-8 are in charge of operating the credit union every Tuesday afternoon. The junior high students learned about the roles involved in the daily operation of the credit union and then applied for positions from Branch Manager to Bookkeeper to Customer Account Representative and Tellers.  The students are responsible for helping the students of Bishop Flaget School deposit money into their new savings accounts on a regular basis, encouraging financial awareness and savings.

The program, operated through Atomic Credit Union, is one of twenty-five student-run branches throughout Ohio. The Student-Run Credit Union program is designed to aid schools with improving financial literacy objectives. Students are provided with hands-on learning activities and an innovative approach to helping students understand the importance of saving money.
