Pickaway County Judge P. Randall Knece sentenced 30-year-old Shaun Lawson to life in prison without parole for murder of his grandfather. Lawson was convicted of fatally shooting Thomas Whitson while trying to steal guns from Whitson's home in Orient.
Judge Knece and Prosecutor Judy Wolford said Lawson seemed to have no remorse. Wolford said she doesn't understand why that is: "The jury asked that question after the trial was over. Certainly, the family would like to know the answer for that."
In a statement before sentencing, Lawson said he was sorry, but he blamed the murder on mental illness.
"He was evaluated by Netcare and was found to be competent to stand trial," said Wolford, "so I don't have any proof that he's mentally ill other than his end statement."
In a video statement after his arrest, Lawson admitted to killing Whitson and said he would have killed his own father had he also been there.
The murder took place in March. Joshua Johnson had been sentenced to seven years in prison for aggravated burglary and grand theft for his involvement. Kyle Robinson, Jesse Akers, and Jordan Legg are also accused in the case.
