Earthworks in Newark, at FortAncient, and the 5 Hopewell sites are being presented as a single nomination to be registered to the World Heritage List.

Dean Alexander, superintendent of Hopewell Culture National Historical Park, said the earthworks are worthy of the distinction: "People from all over North America would come here 2,000 years ago to participate in the activities that were going on here, and we would like to see that recognized nationally and world wide.”

The nomination made the tentative list and now seeks a formal bid.

"The sites on the World Heritage List are the wonders of the world," said Dr. Brett Ruby, an archaeologist. "These are Stonehenge, the Great Pyramids, the Great wall, and these Hopewell ceremonial earthworks are very much a member of that class."
